Regent's Canal Lighting Scheme; Hampstead Road Bridge
Description
Commissioned by Camden Town Centre Management
Target: A £250,000 scheme, installed and partly designed by Bpa, covering about a kilometre of towpath and nine canal underbridge locations in the Camden Lock area. The aim was to create an imaginative scheme for this vibrant area of London which would also enhance amenity and safety for towpath users and help reduce crime and the fear of crime. This bridge scheme features 63 cold cathode lamps, in custom made fittings merged into the bridge structure, controlled by a dimmable digital multiplex system allowing each lamp to be individually addressed and co-ordinated with the others in elaborate kinetic chase sequences, replayed in a unique automated show each evening. Design concept by students from Central Saint Martins College of Art.
Achievement: The scheme has become a much talked about feature of the area and is reported to have succeeded in its community safety objectives. Winner of London Regional Association of Town Centre Managers Award in 2006.
